Terms and Conditions of Entry
• Participants will be responsible for the roadworthiness of their own cycle.
• No accompanying vehicles are allowed to follow riders. Any participant failing to observe this regulation will be withdrawn from the event.
• The event is not a race or trial of speed, but a personal challenge and as such there will be no list published which sorts riders either in finishing time or finishing position order. An alphabetical list of finishers and times will be published.
• The event takes place on the open road so riders must abide by the Highway Code at all times. The function of marshals is only to indicate direction and riders must decide whether the movement is safe.
• Safety-approved cycling helmets are compulsory. We recommend cycle helmets complying with ANSI Z90/4 or SNELL standards. Any rider not wearing a helmet whilst participating on the event will be excluded.
• Riders must be sixteen or older on the day of the race to enter the event.
• All participants under the age of eighteen must gain the consent of their parent / guardian prior to completing their entry. A parent or guardian must also accompany riders under the age of eighteen.
• The use of triathlon handlebars is discouraged. However, where riders do have them fitted they are not to be used when riding in a group.
• Riders participate in this event entirely at their own risk, must rely on their own ability in dealing with all hazards, and must ride in a manner which is safe to themselves and others.
• If riders do not abide by these terms and conditions the organisers will make all reasonable efforts to remove them from the event.
• Riders agree to abide by the British Cycling regulations that are relevant to Non-Competitive Cycling events.
• No liability whatsoever shall attach to the promoter, promoting club / organisation, event sponsor, or any event official or member of the promoting club / organisation in respect of any injury, loss or damage suffered by participants in or by reason of the event, unless such injury, loss or damage is proven to be caused by the negligence of the aforementioned.
• Helen &Douglas House reserve the right to use any photographs taken at the event for future event publicity.
Advisory notes for riders:
Safety
• Riders are requested to ride in single file where appropriate and no more than 2 abreast at any time. Please be aware of your fellow cyclists and other traffic.
• Riders will be set off in groups of 20 or less at two minute intervals.
• The use of unconventional handlebars such as triathlon bars, aero bars, clip-ons and Spinacci type bars are not recommended. Where they are fitted they should not be used when riding in a group.
• Mobile support vehicles in the form of cars or motorbikes are strictly forbidden and will lead to disqualification from the event.
• Rider’s number, issued at registration, must be displayed on the front of the bike for identification.
• Each rider will be issued with a timing chip and this will be used to give split times and ensure account that all riders have returned safely at the end of the event. Riders are requested to return their timing chips immediately after finishing so the organisers know they do not have to search the course for them!
Practicalities
• From start to finish there will be signage marking each route. Yellow arrows will mark the direction to be taken at each junction where a change of direction is necessary. If no sign is present at a junction, riders should assume the route continues to follow the priority of the road being travelled along.
• It cannot be guaranteed that all direction signs are still in position through the duration of the event. In case of uncertainty, riders should refer to their printed route card.
• All riders are recommended to carry 2 drink bottles, an energy bar or similar snack, a spare tube and wet weather clothing. It is also advisable that riders carry ID and a small amount of money.
• There will be support vehicles on each route and riders experiencing difficulties will be transported to the finish if required.
• All volunteers involved in the event will be clearly identifiable by orange Helen & Douglas House t-shirts.
